Big Magic

The book I'm about to report on today is motivated by a desire to share a great read rather than pass an English course.

Big Magic - Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert.  Yes, the author of Eat Pray Love.

Whether we yearn to write a book, paint a masterpiece, compose a song or simply infuse our daily existence with passion, Big Magic introduces us to new ways to address the challenges that accompany our dreams.

Gilbert says that if you want to be an artist of any sort, handling your frustration is perhaps the single most fundamental aspect.  Frustration is not an interruption of your process; frustration is the process.

The fun part is when you're actually creating something wonderful and everything's going great.  But such instants are rare.  You don't just get to leap from bright moment to bright moment.  How you manage yourself between those bright moments, is a measure of how devoted you are and how equipped you are for the demands of creative living.

Everything sucks some of the time.  You have to decide what sort of 'suckage' you're willing to deal with.

This book isn't flavoured with the verbiage of today's all too common motivational hucksters.  It's written from the heart of a writer who lives the creative life every single day.  She bravely bares her soul and in doing so, helps us to better understand both the hardship and the glory of what we do.

It's not often I recommend a book - most people have an already well-developed sense of what they enjoy.  This is an exception that I'm hoping you'll consider - I genuinely believe it will crack open new doors in your future creative endeavours.  It did for me.

If you've already discovered this book, has it affected you're creative approach?
